Washington Work Zone Wrecks Injure More than 725 Each Year

Work zones are a necessary part of life in Washington, and this is going to continue as long as communities grow and more motorists take to the state’s already-busy roadways. Yet, work zones are also often more than just an annoyance. They are also frequent sites for car wrecks, many of which result in at least one injury or fatality.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, Washington sees hundreds of work zone crashes and injuries every year. Some of these crashes occur because of environmental factors, such as unclear detours. Other times, they result from the negligence of other drivers navigating the same areas.

Washington Work Zone Crash Statistics

Each year, an average of about 726 work zone injuries occur in construction zone car crashes in Washington. The vast majority, or 94% of those who experience injuries in work zone crashes, are those driving or riding in passenger vehicles, rather than those working construction in these areas. Many construction zones crash result from the same circumstances. Speeding, inattentive driving and following too closely are the top three causes of work zone crashes.

The Washington State Department of Transportation urges motorists to exercise caution when making their way through the state’s many work zones. Drivers may be able to reduce their chances of involvement in a work zone wreck by obeying all posted speed limits, remaining vigilant and calm, and focusing their attention on making it through the construction zone safely.

Motorists who suffer injuries in work zone wrecks due to the negligence of someone else may have recourse available to them.
